In 1938, Soviet engineers secretly bought in Sweden 5 motorcycles BMW R71, which were fully disassembled and researched in order to create their own motorcycle. The first M-72s were the full copy of BMW R71.

It was produced, constantly being modernized, from 1940 to 1961. Built specifically for military needs, the motorcycle was not available on the market until 1952 and was classified as “armored vehicle” (small arms carrier). Bavarian motorcycle had duplex frame, spring suspension of the rear wheel, lever of the foot shift, telescopic front fork, separate carburettors for each cylinder and cardan gear uncharacteristic for Soviet models of that time. The characteristic opposition arrangement of cylinders had objective advantages and predetermined the development of heavy BMW motorcycles and Soviet manufacturers for decades to come.
