Burning stone – “anthrax”, as Aristotle’s pupil in 315 BC called the fossil coal or later anthracite. Its primitive extraction for domestic purposes was conducted in ancient China and Greece. The Roman villas of Italy were heated with coal. Also on the territory of modern Ukraine were found ancient drifts and dumps dated IX-X centuries.

Much has changed since then: modern mines reach over a kilometre of depth and production is measured in millions of tonnes.
Once people went down to the bottom of the mines in primitive iron boxes, and now – on the vertical shafts of mines up to 1600 m deep, a mine cage or such a kind of elevator can move at speeds up to 12 m/s.

The deepest coal mine is available at our overseas neighbors – the Ukrainians. “Shakhterskaya-Glubokaya” has a depth of about 1.5 kilometers or rather 1546 meters and the city with the self-explanatory name Shakhtarsk, in Donetsk region, is its address. It was built in 1986. Newspapers wrote then that “Shakhterskaya-Glubokaya” was the deepest mine in the USSR and later in the world of coal mines at the moment.
