Fingers slightly touch the keys and are about to start playing. The pipe goes up to the lips. Drum sticks are ready. Improvisation begins, and the jazz band instantly creates a musical composition that no one has ever heard before. When each instrument picks up the melody, the song transforms – and how it turns out, even the musician does not understand. The legendary jazz trumpet player Miles Davis talked about it this way: “First I’ll play it and then I’ll tell you what it is.” Neurobiologist Dr. Charles Limb said that jazz is absolute creativity in action. “When you hear good jazz – like John Coltrane or Miles Davis – it has a stunning quality, what they call the sound of surprise,” says Limb. – And then you think to yourself: “Oh, wow! It’s not just phenomenal music, it’s phenomenal neurobiology”.

Jazz as a direction of music emerged in the early twentieth century as a synthesis of African and European cultures as an art based on improvisation combined with a pre-conceived but not necessarily recorded form of composition. Several performers can improvise simultaneously, even if the solo voice is clearly heard in the ensemble. The complete artistic image of the work depends on the interaction of the ensemble members among themselves and with the audience.

Characteristics: polyrhythmia based on syncopated rhythms, bit – regular pulsation, swing – deviation from the bit, a complex of techniques for performing rhythmic texture, improvisational, colorful harmonic and timbre series, all this is called in one short word – Jazz.
