There are many remote and inaccessible areas in mountainous Georgia. The inhabitants of these places have preserved their ancient traditions and passionate disposition, as well as the local architecture and landscape are fascinating. One such place is the village of Shatili in Khevsureti region. This is a fortress village built of flat stones, which is still inhabited by locals. It’s hard to reach it, but you can still get there by transport.

Khevsureti has never been a tourist region. It stretches along the Caucasus mountain range and borders on Chechnya. And the locals of Khevsura still live a traditional closed life. The customary laws, the code of honor, are still observed here. That’s why they look carefully at visitors, they are reluctant to talk. The Khevsurs are especially strict in their policy not to sell their homes or land to strangers.

The village of Shatili itself is famous for its fortification architecture (stone defensive towers). These are real fortresses with towers. This was how the locals defended themselves against the aliens and the harsh environmental conditions. Shatili is the most famous village of Khevsureti, the road goes here. In recent years more and more Georgians and foreign tourists have started going to Shatili for the weekend, so the local residents have some jobs again. In the past, their main activity was the war with Chechens. There are about 10 guest houses, when tourists come, the hostess prepares dishes for sale and some handmade items.

Today only a few dozen families live permanently in Shatili, as in other villages of Khevsureti. There is no infrastructure here, public transport is almost non-existent, there are no shops, no telephones or the Internet. But it is a special place with a deep history and a unique atmosphere. From Tbilisi to Shatili – about 150km, but the last 100km can take up to 6 hours due to the complexity of the terrain and lack of quality road surface.
