The word “suitcase” is derived from the Persian word “jomodan”, which refers to a spacious rectangular box designed to carry things and store them.

Today a suitcase is a familiar thing for every traveler. However, relatively recently, namely, two centuries ago, there were no signs of suitcases. At that time people carried their luggage in chests, bags and baskets, which was not very convenient – chests were too bulky, as well as it was impossible to carry fragile and expensive things in a bag without the risk of damaging them.

It must be said that trip was carried out in wagons and carriages at that time. When the more popular transport became cars and trains, there was a need for more compact and comfortable luggage containers. The suitcase as we know it appeared in the middle of the XIX century. The merit of his invention belongs to the French master Louis Vuitton, who made the side surfaces of his products hard and flat, making them convenient to transport by simply putting them on top of each other. Due to this innovation, the clothes in the suitcase did not crumple or lose their appearance, and fragile items were securely protected.
